Riverwalk raises funds for mental health center

ROCHESTER, NY – Dozens of people walked along the Genesee River in Rochester for the annual Riverwalk to raise funds for the Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center.

“We are here because we believe health care is a human right,” said Amy Durkee, director of the Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center. “We are here for people who don’t have insurance or who can’t pay their co-payments. So our services are free for people who come here and that’s why we have fundraising because we have always worry about supply costs. “

Durkeee explains that since people without insurance are 15 times less likely to seek help, their goal is to make sure everyone gets the care they need to solve their problems.

Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center offers free mental health counseling and other wellness services such as peer support meetings and yoga.

“Maintaining my regular sanity that is going to keep me there, will keep me at that level of functioning of how I want to function and contribute to my family and my community the way I want to contribute,” said Durkee.

Durkee also expressed his excitement that so many people have come to support the mental health center for their biggest annual fundraiser.

“I see it as a matter of access,” Durkee said. “It’s also about breaking the stigma. All of these people come forward saying it’s a real thing. Diabetes is a real thing. Just like mental illness. And people should get the care they need. . ”
