RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — May is Mental Health Awareness Month. According to National Alliance on Mental Illness, 20% of adolescents aged 13 to 18 live with a mental health problem; 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin before age 14; suicide is the 3rd cause of death among children aged 10 to 24; and 90% of those who committed suicide had an underlying mental illness.
These statistics are heartbreaking for Leigh Hurst, spiritual life coach at Useful Life Healing Center in Midtown. She started her business 10 years ago to help the elderly. Now her business has taken a significant turn in helping people deal with trauma, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.
Over the past two years, she has also begun to see more tweens and young adults struggling with deep emotional pain and anxiety. Granted, the pandemic has done nothing to improve adolescent mental health, but social pressures, screen addiction, cyberbullying and increased global conflict have caused more and more young people to seek help. ‘aid.
Hurst offers individual and group classes for counselling, spiritual cleansing and sound healing.
Here is a list of his upcoming May classes:
- May 14 – Little Humans Healing Circle (8-12 years old)
- May 16 – Full Moon Sister Sound Bath
- May 21 – Embodied Movement for Emotional Release
- May 21 – Mom and Me Sound Game Store! (4-7 years)
- May 28 – Group of young women (13-17 years old)
